Delaney Davidson presents a show of works stemming from his time in the Stoddart Cottage residency in May 2023 that catapulted him headlong into his fascination with landscape painting. Too few hours in the day and too many sightings to try and bring into being, left him stranded between capturing the vision at the risk of misrepresentation, and a light-handed touch to suggestion.

Having grown up in and around the Port Hills Delaney has always been watching them either from the classroom window or through the windscreen of his night-time driving, so Nocturnes feature heavily in these evocative pictures.

Showing a healthy disregard for the actual and some trust in process Davidson’s paintings are crouching somewhere comfortably in the middle of being something and not being something. Locally sublime yet regionally specific.

While better known for his award-winning music, Lyttelton Ōhinehou artist Delaney Davidson has a background in visual arts. Working in oils, printmaking and design, he has exhibited in solo shows in Melbourne, Switzerland and New Zealand. As an artist-in-residence at Massey University in 2022, Delaney presented two exhibitions and a nationwide campaign in collaboration with Tame Iti. He was a Stoddart Cottage-Purau artist-in-residence in 2023 supported by Toi Ōtautahi’s Year of the Arts.
