In the exhibition, Myths and Mortals: Life in Ancient Greece, Marian Maguire is represented by Penelope weaves and waits, 2017, an acrylic on wood fireplace, painted in black-figure designs and images of the story of Penelope, the ‘most of cleverest women and queen of Ithaca.’

Maguire’s refined silhouettes figures and forms track the narrative of Penelope’s long wait for the return of her husband, Odysseus, set upon by numerous suitors, their grasping hands either side of her in the fire place panel, and the feet of her unfortunate handmaidens, (discovered in associated with them) hanging from a line. Penelope weaves and waits is only one of Myths and Mortals: Life in Ancient Greece many highlights.
