Neil Fitzgerald remembers when he was 16, attending a fine arts course at Southland Polytechnic:  ‘It was here that I was introduced to life drawing. I vividly remember one of my instructors emphasizing the immense difficulty of capturing the human figure on paper, highlighting considerations such as proportions, achieving likeness, and conveying not just shape but also form. This challenge resonated with me deeply over 30 years. In 2008 I found my community at the Cranmer Life Drawing Group, meeting like-minded individuals dedicated to exploring the complexities of the human form through art.  Drawing has been crucial in shaping my artistic identity.
