Master of Fine Arts graduate Sandra Hussey will open our 2019 programme with her solo exhibition Fluid Scapes which includes a number of painted artworks which are an extension on a larger body of work she made during her Masters in 2018. Hussey’s practice is informed by the history of painting and her interest in formal qualities such as colour, composition and abstraction.  For this exhibition she has been drawn to a palette inspired by the New Zealand landscape and waterways.

Unique to her approach is the way she constructs her works.  She experiments with the physical qualities of paint, with her works being constructed like a collage, working both directly on the canvas and also layering skins of paint onto the surface of the canvas.

The tension between chaos and order, the materiality of surface and colour associations are ongoing concerns in her painting practice. Informed by nature and alluding to water there is symmetry between the pooling of paint and of aqueous pools.
